maintenance

Stage 3

Inspect the problem

Compare what the client says with what you see. Write down the facts before you decide who is responsible.

1

Start with the client

Ask the client to show you each problem. Take photos of any damage before you touch anything. Write down extra requests separately.

CheckWhat to look for
Doors and drawersDo they line up, rub, stick or sag? Check hinges, runners and soft-close.
Cupboard bodies and panelsSwelling, peeling, cracks, loose joints and damage. Note where and how big.
FittingIs it level, straight and fixed well? Compare with the drawings.
Water, heat and airDamp, leaks, steam or heat. Say if a specialist must test it.
HardwareMake and model if you can tell. Wear and damage. Can we get a replacement?
Other workPlumbing, stone tops, appliances, or changes by someone else. Do not blame anyone.
2

Take good photos

For each problem, take one photo from far away and one close-up. Add measurements. Label each photo with the job, room and item number. Write down what you tested. Use a video if something moves or only fails sometimes.

3

Say how to fix it

Write down if it needs an adjustment, a repair, a replacement or more checking. For a remake or replacement part, measure the size and thickness. Note the material, finish, edge, hardware and left or right hand. If you are not sure it matches, check before you order.
